In the mid 1800's there lived a family on a farm called "Froslid". Located in Oppland, Norway in an area called "Nordre Land", the farm probably grew vegitables and had a few goats and cows. It was certainly too cold and too mountainous to grow more substantial crops, such as wheat. The family was large, with eight children, and land in the area was scarce. How could such a large family survive given the limited opportunities in the area? Throughout Norway, and probably in their own tiny village, word had spread about the opportunities available in the United States of America. There was plenty of land and bountiful opportunities for those who were willing to work hard.

In 1882, Anton Svendsen Froslid, one of the youngest in the family, left his parents, his twin brother Niels, and three other siblings for the United States. His siblings Syver, Christian, Mathias, and Agnethe had already made the journey.

This website is about Anton Svendsen Froslid and the rest of the Froslid family. It tells the story of those who emmigrated to the United States as well as the story of those who remained behind. What was life like in Nordre Land during the 1800s? Why did so many of the siblings leave for the U.S.? How did the family cope with the challenges of living on the praire? What happened to those who stayed? Answering questions such as these is a challenge. The website tries to paint a picture of the family by using archival records, both here and in Norway, about the Froslids. It also uses more general sources about Norwegian immigration, traditions, the late 1800's and the 1900s.
